As I said in the last post, I now have six sites. But having six sites is not enough – it must have content. To pressurize myself to create the content, I have created another site – BinnyVA.com.

BinnyVA basically aggregates all my feeds and shows them in a calendar. The idea is to use this calendar as a Seinfeld Calendar. Don’t know what a Seinfeld Calendar is? Here is an except…

… get a big wall calendar that has a whole year on one page and hang it on a prominent wall. The next step was to get a big red magic marker.

… for each day that I do my task of writing, I get to put a big red X over that day. “After a few days you’ll have a chain. Just keep at it and the chain will grow longer every day. You’ll like seeing that chain, especially when you get a few weeks under your belt. Your only job next is to not break the chain.”

The difference is that my calendar is virtual and public.

All I have to do is ‘Don’t break the chain‘. Make sure that each day has at least one post in it. Its going well for the last 2 months.

A word of warning before you use this method for your sites. Although the quantity of post goes up, the quality may come down. If you have not created a post by 11 at night, you will be forced to write something – and that something is often below par. It happened to me more than once.

It goes without saying that my calendar has another benefit – Google Juice. Each and every post on all my sites have at least one link from an external site. That can’t be bad.

On a related note, there is a combined feed of all my feeds – powered by Yahoo Pipes.

In my last post, I explained my intrest in finding words that can be typed using just the left hand on a qwerty keyboard. Apparently I am not alone in my quest. Many others also have tried to solve the same mystry. A few that came to my attention are…

A text file with all ‘Left Handed’ words

Left Hand words grouped by length

Left-Hand Keyboard Words

My Method to find the answer

I used a much more geeky way to come to the answer. If you have seen my other blog, you may already know that I use Linux OS. One not-so-well-known file in the Linux OS is the ‘
/usr/share/dict/words
‘ file. This contains almost all words in the English language – alphabetically sorted. Now all I have to do is run a command to search through this file for all the words that has only the letters ‘qwertasdfgzxcvb’.

Enter grep. For those who are have not used Grep(or regular expressions), please avert your eyes – this is going to look like swearing to you…

cat /usr/share/dict/words|grep -Pi '^[qwertadsfgzxcvb]+$'

What this does is search through the entire word list for words that have just the given letter(qwertadsfgzxcvb) from beginning to end. An image to make things clearer…

I am not going to make this post a regular expression tutorial – but if you want to study Regular expressions, this site is a very good one for it. And if you are a programmer, I recommend that you study Regular expression – it will save you a lot of time. And if you are not a programmer, I am surprised that you have not already left the page. Anyway some of the biggest words I found using this method…

aftereffect
desegregate
exacerbated
exacerbates
exaggerated
exaggerates
reverberate
vertebrates

Update: Its official – the longest word that can be typed with the left had is ‘Stewardesses’

More Linux Commands

More Linux command that can be used to do this job…

cat /usr/share/dict/words|grep -Piv '[yuiophjklnm]'

Looks for words without the any of the other letters – ‘yuiophjklnm’

cat /usr/share/dict/words|grep -P '^[qwertasdfgzxcvb]{11,}$'

Finds only the largest words – 11 letters or more.

cat /usr/share/dict/words|sed '/[yuiophklnm]/d'

Uses another program – ‘sed‘ to do the same job.

cat /usr/share/dict/words|sed -n '/^[qwertadsfgzxcvb]*$/p'

Another way of doing it in sed.

The script for Online Sudoku is available for use on any website free of charge in the GPL license. Considering the fact that many people have used my script, I think it is time to make it easier for even more to use it. I will provide two different version of Online Sudoku.

Code Version

You should download and run it from your site. To use this version, you should download the zip file and publish it in your own site. This would make it difficult to use with various blogging platforms like Blogger, WordPress etc. The main advantage of this approch is that you can customise this code as you see fit.

Remote Version

You just have to place a bit of HTML code in your page and the sudoku puzzle will appear on that site. This is done by use the script on my site remotely – so the visitors will see the script inside your page. The puzzle you see below is an example of this.

This will make it easy to include the Sudoku Puzzle in blog posts, Profile pages, etc. All you have to do is include this HTML code in your site…

<iframe src="http://www.bin-co.com/javascript/sudoku/remote/sudoku.php"
height="420" width="540" scrolling="auto" frameborder="0"
style="float:right;"></iframe>

If you want to customise the script, this will not be of great use to you – you will need the code version.

The result will be this…
